About Bahamas, Bahamas

One country, 700 islands, 100 000 square miles: The Bahamas is an archipelago spanning the Northern Atlantic Ocean between Florida and Hispaniola. With only 29 islands inhabited, here is a great destination to find peace and tranquility in your choice of location.

The Bahamas is filled with natural wonders. Visit the third largest barrier reef in the world just off Andros Island, see the world’s deepest blue hole in The Abacos, or explore Inagua Park, the world’s largest breeding colony of pink flamingos, the national bird of The Bahamas. Discover the unique fauna, flora and landscapes of The Bahamas on wildlife nature tours, by bird-watching or simply by taking a glass bottom boat ride.

Sailing is a favourite pastime in this part of the world, and you can charter a boat for a lazy day on the ocean. Competitive and professional sailors can participate in the regattas and fishing tournaments held throughout the year in the various islands. Elizabeth Harbour in The Exumas is the site of the annual National Family Island Regatta, held in April, and the George Town Cruising Regatta, which has been run for the past 25 years. Other sports include golf, tennis, cricket, horseback riding, snorkeling, bonefishing, and sea kayaking.

With a historical past which includes Amerindian, American, British and African heritage, The Bahamas features some unique cultural preserves. Visit Rolle Town in The Exumas, named for the 500 persons with surname “Rolle” who live there. In Hamilton’s Cave in The Abacos you can still see engravings by the Lucayan Indians on the walls of the cave. The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation in Nassau is found at Vendue House, the marketplace where slaves were sold in the eighteenth century.

The Bahamas provides ultra modern facilities in a Caribbean paradise. Banking, internet access, international direct dialing and telecommunications facilities are all easily available. Large luxurious accommodations have made The Bahamas a great location for conferences and incentive group travel. And of course, for the adventurous spirit, the pull of casino gambling with the chance of having the big win, has added to the allure of these fantasy islands.
